Horsham Township will join the growing number of communities supplying their police force with the life saving Narcan nasal spray.

Horsham Township will join the growing number of communities supplying their police force with the life saving Narcan nasal spray. Announced at Monday’s Township Council meeting on Feb. 27, all Horsham Police Department patrol vehicles will carry the heroin overdose antidote.

“We hope to have the program rolled out by mid-March,” said Horsham Chief of Police William Daly. “We are unfortunately in an epidemic across this country. Narcan is a way we can help save lives.”

While all ambulances and emergency medical services in the township were previously supplied Narcan, this will be the first time all patrol vehicles will have it. Police are currently in training to administer the nasal spray, and will have it completed by the first week of March.

“Police are normally the first responders on these scenes,” said Horsham Township Manager William Walker. “Sometimes emergencies cannot wait minutes and require immediate action.”

The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety provided the funding for Narcan. Since being instated with emergency services throughout the county, Daly said, Narcan has saved over 100 lives.
