Horsham Township Police Department participates every six months in the DEA’s nation-wide “Drug Take-Back” Campaign – a free, popular drive-thru, drop-off collection program, which was initiated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration several years ago. Its goals include safely disposing of expired pharmaceuticals, removing them from the sanitary sewer system and ultimately out of drinking water, and keeping them from falling into in the wrong hands, leading to serious addiction, legal and social problems.
All forms of medication, including tablets, capsules, pills, liquids and ointments, whether purchased by prescription or over-the-counter, will be accepted. However sharpies and syringes cannot be accepted due to the potential hazards posed by blood-borne pathogens.
Drug Take Back Protocol
National Drug Take-back Day provides a unified opportunity for the public to surrender expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications to law enforcement officers for destruction.
Items that will be collected are as follows:
- Controlled, non-controlled, and over the counter medications will be collected.
- This program is absolutely anonymous. No questions or requests for identification will be made by law enforcement personnel present.
- Participants will remove any personal information from bottles or packages that contain pills/capsules and liquids and place the bottles or packages into the disposal box.
- Liquid products and creams in its containers will be accepted.
- Sharpies and syringes will not be accepted due to the potential hazard posed by blood-borne pathogens. *NO NEEDLES*
- Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not a part of this initiative and should not be placed in the collection boxes. If an individual attempts to surrender an illicit controlled substance, law enforcement personnel should handle such material as abandoned property in accordance with department policy.
